Begin with the controls shown in your game
Dressmaker has several workspaces. A control used for the camera may not do the same thing at the cutting table. Follow the tutorial and on-screen tool hints in the edition you are playing.
We have not verified a complete keyboard map for the hosted browser build. This page does not assign Steam controls to the browser edition or promise touch support on every phone.
Identify the workspace before changing anything
Use the current on-screen hint to answer three questions: what is selected, which action is available, and which stage are you in? A key or mouse action from another workspace or edition can have a different effect.
| Workspace | Look for | Review before moving on |
|---|---|---|
| Sketchbook | Selected garment components and the planned design | Does the selection address the brief? |
| Cutting table | Selected pattern and indicated grain / bias direction | Is each pattern arranged as intended? |
| Mannequin | Which panel is selected and where it belongs | Are required pieces assembled? |
| Sewing machine | The seam and the current control prompt | Have the required sewing steps been completed? |
| Decoration | Selected accessory and the requirement panel | Did the change satisfy its own requirement or affect a capped attribute? |
This is a workspace checklist, not a complete keyboard map. Use an editable checklist to keep requirement notes separate from your control notes.
At the cutting table
Look for the grain or bias direction on the pattern before arranging it on the material. Placement determines which part of a fabric’s print appears on the final piece, as well as how the pattern is aligned.
Review the layout before committing a cut. It is useful to save space, but a piece placed against its indicated direction should not be treated as correctly aligned just because it fits.
In Steam Build 410, the developers changed the mouse wheel behaviour so that panels should not rotate when the mouse is over the inventory. If an older guide shows different behaviour, check which build it describes.
At the mannequin
Published coverage describes assembling the dress on a fitted mannequin before sewing. Work one piece at a time so that it is easier to see what has been attached.
The Build 410 announcement says hovering over a panel in the inventory displays a hint about where it belongs. It also makes the clickable component names in the sketchbook easier to recognise. These are documented Steam improvements, not confirmed features of the browser edition.
At the sewing machine
The official game description says you feed fabric through the machine to stitch it together. Published hands-on articles describe actively guiding the fabric along the seam.
Use the visible sewing instructions in your build. Watch the seam and slow down if the available controls let you do so. When quality is short, separate a sewing mistake from measurement or cutting alignment before choosing what to redo.
Build 410 also added thread-colour changes by clicking the spools. Older screenshots or the browser edition may not offer that control.
At the decoration stage
First read whether the brief calls for a named accessory, a number of attached items or an attribute score. Do not assume that a fabric with a similar name satisfies a separate accessory requirement.
For example, our Studious Motivation reference explains why a lace-related fabric choice alone is not evidence that a lace-trim line passes. The supplied illustration has an unmet trim target. Use your own panel to confirm the required unit and amount.
After placing an accessory, recheck both its named requirement and any style limits. The Chilly Overtime reference is a source-reported example where cute and romantic attributes have upper limits. Do not make extra decoration the default response to every shortfall.
Use full screen without starting over
The Fullscreen button below our play window requests a larger view of the same game. Where native full screen is unavailable, it uses an expanded page view. Exit with the button or the browser’s full-screen control.
Opening the How to play panel does not restart the game. Restart loading does recreate the play window, so use it only when you mean to restart, and check for unsaved progress first.
If a control does not respond
- Click inside the game to give its window focus.
- Read the current workspace’s prompt before trying a key from an older guide.
- Check whether a tutorial step or dialogue still needs to be completed.
- Try a supported desktop browser if the mobile controls are difficult to use.
- Record the edition, workspace and exact action if you ask for help.
A page can be responsive while its embedded game still has limited touch support. Our platform reference separates native releases from browser compatibility.
Record a control problem clearly
If an action still does not respond, record the workspace, selected item, exact action, and what appeared on screen. A short record might read: “Cutting table; pattern selected; used the visible rotation control; no movement observed.” That describes an observation without assigning an unverified cause.
Add the game source, platform and build if visible. Steam patch changes should be checked against the official update history; a browser edition with no build label should be recorded as unknown rather than assigned the Steam build number.
When possible, keep a screenshot of the current hint and requirement panel. That is more useful for reproducing a problem than a finished-dress image by itself. Refer to the official support resources for game-specific help.
